Job Description

In order to be considered for this position, the candidate must have filed for the upcoming Assistant Civil Engineer Open - Competitive civil service Exam # 7006 and provide proof of filing.

The Division of Traffic Operations’ Signals, Street Lighting, Engineering, and Design Unit is seeking motivated candidates to perform responsible work in civil engineering. Candidates will conduct research, investigations, studies, and examinations related to the engineering functions and activities of the agency. Responsibilities include preparing designs and plans using AutoCAD; evaluating contract documents, specifications, working drawings, and other technical materials; and developing estimates of quantities.

Candidates will conduct field visits, complete lighting survey projects, and respond to lighting improvement requests to ensure compliance with City standards, IESNA guidelines, and national electrical codes. The successful candidates will coordinate with design consultants and review submitted plans for the development or modification of new and existing signalized intersections and street lighting installations. Additional duties include coordinating electrical service, relocations, and other utility-related requests.

Candidate will advise and make recommendations to City and State agencies regarding traffic signal and street lighting projects. They will review and approve shop drawings and catalogue cuts for construction, and maintain records of drawings, plans, maps, surveys, and inspection data.
Some assignments may require a driver's license. Preference will be given to candidate who possess a driver's license valid in the state of New York. This license must be maintained throughout the duration of the appointment in this position

Hours/Shift: 35 Hrs/Mon-Fri/8 am-4pm

Preferred Skills:
- Detail oriented, accurate, and able to demonstrate excellent verbal and strong written communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively with others and collaborate in a team environment.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD and strong computer skills, including Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Familiarity with lighting design software such as Visual Professional, AGi32, and photometric analysis tools.
- Knowledge of Illuminating Engineering Society of North America (IESNA) recommendations, NEC, NESC, AASHTO, and FHWA standards.
- Ability to read and interpret contract specifications and other technical documents.

Qualifications

1. A baccalaureate degree in civil engineering from an accredited college or university and one year of fulltime satisfactory experience in civil engineering work; or

2. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university in civil engineering technology and three years of full-time satisfactory experience in civil engineering work; or

3. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university and a master’s degree in civil engineering from an accredited college or university.
