Original job description
Company DescriptionValterra Platinum, formerly Anglo American Platinum, is a leading primary producer of platinum group metals (PGMs), with integrated mining, smelting, and refining operations in South Africa and Zimbabwe, marketing the metal we produce globally. Following our demerger from Anglo American plc, Valterra Platinum is now an independent, publicly listed company with a primary and secondary listing on the Johannesburg and London stock exchanges respectively.
As we embark on this exciting new chapter, Valterra Platinum is positioned to define and pursue its own strategy, anchored in operational excellence, sustainability, and value creation for the long-term. With full accountability for our performance and growth, we are focused on strengthening our capabilities across the entire PGM value chain, from mine to market.
Our independence empowers us to deepen our commitment to stakeholders and lead with purpose – to Unearth Value to Better Our World. We remain steadfast in our ambition to be the world’s foremost producer of platinum group metals, while embedding safety and sustainability in everything we do.
If you're driven by purpose and the opportunity to make a lasting impact, we invite you to join us. Apply today and be part of something bigger.
This role is based in Mokopane, Limpopo.

Lead or provide specialist input into significant failure investigations and actions to prevent repeat failures.
- Provide operational technical support, engineering assurance, project input, mentoring and discipline development within the operation, and share lessons and good practice with relevant peers.
- Provide specialist engineering guidance that supports a risk-controlled operating environment and prevents structural failure, mechanical failure, dropped objects, uncontrolled energy and harm during lifting, safeguarding and work at height. Stop work where authorised, or recommend restriction or withdrawal from service, where mechanical or structural integrity cannot be demonstrated.
- Develop, calculate, model, check and review mechanical and structural designs, drawings, specifications,
- modifications, repair methods and technical reports. Approve and professionally sign off work only where this falls within the incumbent’s ECSA registration, demonstrated competence and formally delegated authority.
- Use approved specialist engineering applications for load determination, structural analysis, finite element analysis, fatigue assessment, vibration analysis and mechanical design calculations.
- Define and verify dead, live, operational, dynamic, impact, vibration, fatigue, wind, thermal, pressure, equipment, material and lifting loads, including load combinations, boundary conditions and safety factors.
- Ensure designs address constructability, operability, maintainability, inspectability, reliability, lifecycle cost, safe access, change management and decommissioning.
- Provide specialist engineering support and discipline guidance for steel, reinforced concrete and other mining structures, including equipment supports, workshops, platforms, walkways, ladders, handrails, pipe racks, conveyors, bins, tanks, silos, chutes, crane gantries and foundations.
- Provide engineering assurance and operational technical support for HME, underground and concentrator systems at the operation, including shovels, haul trucks, drill rigs, LHDs, winders, ropes, pumps, fans, compressors, refrigeration, conveyors, mills, crushers, screens, feeders, pressure equipment, gearboxes, piping and valves.
- Evaluate engineered lift studies for critical and complex lifting operations, including lifted mass, centre of gravity, load distribution, lifting points, lifting or spreader beams, rigging configuration, crane or hoist capacity, supporting structures and ground conditions. Provide recommendations and approve studies only where formally delegated.
- Provide specialist engineering input on machinery guards, interlocks, safe clearances and access control to ensure that safeguarding does not introduce new operational or maintenance risks.
- Review the engineering aspects of platforms, walkways, ladders, guardrails, lifelines, anchor points, fall-protection supports and temporary access systems, and approve them only within formally delegated authority.
