Work Location Location of the internship is in New York, USA. The internship is 5 days a week/Hybrid (3 days per week in-person and 2 days per week telecommuting within the duty station with the supervisor's discretion). Expected duration The internship is for 2 to 6 months and start date is between 19 October 2026 and 15 January 2027. Duties and Responsibilities The intern will contribute to the work of the United Nations Counter-Terrorism Committee Executive Directorate (CTED), which supports the Security Council's Counter-Terrorism Committee in assessing and promoting Member States' implementation of international counter-terrorism obligations. CTED conducts country assessments, identifies capacity-building needs, and analyzes emerging terrorism trends and threats. Specific tasks the intern will fulfill: 1) Conduct legal and policy research on international counter-terrorism frameworks and Security Council resolutions. 2) Support the preparation of briefing notes, analytical reports, and background papers. 3) Review Member State legislation, policies, and practices related to counter-terrorism implementation. 4) Assist in monitoring emerging trends, threats, and developments in terrorism and violent extremism. 5) Contribute to data collection, analysis, and information management activities. 6) Support the organization of meetings, workshops, and stakeholder consultations. 7) Draft summaries of discussions, research findings, and outreach activities. 8) Assist with coordination among UN entities, Member States, and external partners. 9) Contribute to knowledge products and capacity-building initiatives. 10) Perform other substantive research and administrative tasks in support of CTED's mandate and ongoing projects. The internship is designed to be a full-time, in-person internship in New York, USA. Hybrid, remote or part-time setting of the internship may be considered based on the request by the successful candidates. Qualifications/special skills Not available. Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Additional Information The internship is unpaid for a minimum 2 months and maximum of 6 months. This internship is designed to be full time, in-person internship in New York, USA. Hybrid, remote or part-time setting of the internship may be considered based on the request by the successful candidates. The intern will report directly to and work under the supervision and support of the Section Chief. • For internships in the United States of America, candidates who are not United States citizens, permanent residents, or on other non-immigrant visa status will be required to obtain a G-4 visa. The selected candidates shall be responsible for ensuring that they have a valid visa and an employment authorization allowing them to undertake the internship. • Applicants who are children, siblings, sons or daughters-in-law (including step-children, half-siblings, or step-siblings) of an active staff member in the UN Secretariat cannot be engaged as an intern. • Interns are not eligible to apply for, or be appointed to, any position in the professional or above categories, within the United Nations Secretariat for a period of six (6) months following the end of their internship.
