Job Description

Position Summary: 

The Supervisor Group Lead, Sample Management is responsible for leading daily departmental operations and supervising Sample Management personnel to ensure the accurate, timely, and compliant handling of samples throughout the laboratory workflow. This role provides direct leadership for employee performance, development, scheduling, training, and operational execution while serving as a key liaison between Sample Management, Project Management, and laboratory operations. The Supervisor Group Lead oversees workflow prioritization, resolves operational and personnel issues, supports automation and storage systems, and drives continuous improvement initiatives to meet client expectations and departmental performance objectives. Through effective communication, coaching, and resource management, this position ensures a safe, productive, and customer-focused work environment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Supervise, coach, and develop Sample Management employees to ensure individual and team performance objectives are achieved. 

  • Conduct regular one-on-one meetings with direct reports to provide feedback, coaching, performance guidance, and career development support. 

  • Complete all performance management activities, including goal setting, mid-year reviews, year-end evaluations, and ongoing performance discussions. 

  • Address employee concerns, attendance issues, performance deficiencies, and behavioral concerns in a timely and professional manner. 

  • Oversee onboarding activities for new employees and ensure successful integration into the department. 

  • Provide training, mentoring, and development opportunities for new and existing staff. 

  • Conduct interviews and participate in hiring activities to support departmental staffing requirements. 

  • Maintain employee training records and ensure required training is completed and documented. 

  • Coordinate daily department operations, including workload distribution, task assignments, staffing plans, and workflow prioritization. 

  • Establish daily team expectations and communicate operational priorities through shift huddles and routine team communications. 

  • Monitor departmental performance and communicate operational metrics, workflow status, and key updates to leadership and incoming shifts. 

  • Review shift carryover activities, backlog trends, and workflow bottlenecks to ensure timely resolution and continuity between shifts. 

  • Review departmental logbooks and operational records to ensure end-of-shift responsibilities are completed accurately and consistently. 

  • Manage employee schedules and departmental staffing to meet business and customer requirements. 

  • Handle incoming departmental communications and ensure timely response, escalation, and follow-up as needed. 

  • Supervise coordination activities between Sample Management and Client Services/Project Managers to ensure client requirements are understood and fulfilled. 

  • Serve as a key point of contact for resolving operational issues that may impact project execution, turnaround times, or customer satisfaction. 

  • Attend leadership, operational, and cross-functional meetings and communicate relevant information to department personnel. 

  • Cascade organizational, departmental, and operational communications to employees to ensure awareness and alignment. 

  • Oversee long-term sample storage capacity and ensure effective utilization of storage resources. 

  • Support troubleshooting and resolution of Automated Sample Retrieval and Storage System (ASRS) issues to minimize workflow disruptions. 

  • Ensure compliance with laboratory quality systems, safety procedures, chain-of-custody requirements, and standard operating procedures. 

  • Monitor departmental performance and identify opportunities to improve workflow efficiency, quality, productivity, and customer service. 

  • Develop, implement, and monitor operational improvement initiatives to enhance departmental performance. 

  • Evaluate workflow processes and identify opportunities to eliminate inefficiencies and improve service delivery. 

  • Partner with leadership and cross-functional stakeholders to support strategic initiatives and departmental objectives. 

  • Additional Duties as assigned 

Role is 1st Shift, Tues-Sat; 9am - 5:30pm. 

Qualifications

Basic Minimum Qualifications: 

  • High School Diploma 
  • At least 1 year of experience with sample entry and interpretation or technical laboratory experience 
  • Professional working proficiency in English is a requirement, including the ability to read, write and speak in English.
  • Authorization to work in the United States without restriction or sponsorship 

Ideal Candidates will have: 

  • Bachelor's degree in Physical or Biological Science preferred 

  • 4+ years of experience with sample entry and interpretation or technical lab experience 

  • Advanced knowledge of laboratory sample management processes, sample lifecycle requirements, and chain-of-custody principles.

  • Expert proficiency in TALS and other laboratory information management systems. 

  • Strong understanding of laboratory workflows and the ability to coordinate resources to meet operational priorities and client commitments. 

  • Demonstrated ability to independently resolve complex sample management issues and make sound operational decisions. 

  • Previous leadership experience 

  • Strong leadership, mentoring, and training skills with the ability to develop and support team members. 

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to effectively communicate across multiple levels of the organization. 

  • Strong organizational and workflow management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and competing deadlines. 

  • Experience coordinating cross-functional activities between Project Managers, laboratory personnel, and operational teams. 

  • Knowledge of hazardous sample handling, storage, disposal, and associated administrative requirements. 

  • Ability to troubleshoot laboratory systems and coordinate resolution of technical workflow issues. 

  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality, compliance, and customer service. 

  • Ability to function as a lead resource and departmental subject matter expert while fostering a collaborative team environment.
